Let's make butter!

Today during Science we undertook an experiment where we observed a liquid turning into a solid. What began as cream, went through the process of becoming butter, through the strength of our arms. We separated the buttermilk and the butter to finish the process. It was a lot of fun, although the smell wasn't nice at all!

Some people even enjoyed drinking the milk at the end!

Dance fever begins

Today we began our Dance Fever program for this Term. Year 5 were very excited and especially enjoyed learning and participating in an African style dance.

Easter Hat Parade

Imagination runs wild at our Easter Hat Parade. All the cool colourful hats are shown off in style as all grades walk around the school. There is lots of time and effort put in to these hats. It really pays off. All different ideas were put into hats, such as models of big eggs, rabbits and chickens. This all represents new life and the Ressurection of Christ. There was some very interesting hats made out of things at home.

Go to an online newspaper e.g. Daily Telegraph, The Times and find an article where someone has shown an act of kindness. Summarise this article and explain what the act of kindness was.

Week – 8

Create an 8-10 question quiz about the significant event in Australian history you researched. Swap with a partner and complete each other’s quiz.

Role plays in Religion

In Religion we have been talking about times where we have felt hurt or disappointed. Today, we used role plays to act out different scenarios where we may have felt this way. We learnt that physical hurt is not the only type of hurt we can feel and will be linking this with how Jesus felt as he died on the cross for us.

Reader's theatre performance

Today after recess we performed our Reader's theatre based around the picture book "Prudence Wants A Pet."

Gold and fold mufti day

Dear parents,

As you may be aware, three of our staff members will be attending World Youth Day this year. Both Mr Mackey and Mr Lendvai will be stopping over in the Diocese of Tagbilaran, Phillipines to help rebuild their community.

This Friday we are asking students to make a donation to this missionary project by bringing in a note or coin in support of these pilgrims.

Dear Parents and Carers,

This overview outlines the content that will be covered during this term with your child. It is a great reference to keep somewhere prominent so that you can refer back to it with your child and discuss specifics of their learning. Please don’t hesitate in contacting us if you have any queries or concerns about your child.

Religious Education

The units of work that we will be completing this term are:

Lent – Practices and Promises: students will explore the themes of covenant (relationship between God and God’s people), commandment and law. There is a particular emphasis on the ten commandments and the law of love.

Easter Triduum – Crossroads: students will explore situations in their lives when they are faced with making decisions. Students will study key Gospel accounts of incidents during Jesus’ passion and death which demanded decisions of Jesus and others. Insights will be related to the students own

critical reflection on their personal decision making.

English

During this term, students will be reading and viewing a wide variety of texts.  We will be focusing on how writers use language features and other elements to meet the needs of their audience and the purpose of their writing.  We will be focusing on a range of comprehension strategies such as:

·       Activating prior knowledge

·       Questioning

·       Summarising

Students will write informative, persuasive and imaginative texts.  Through our analysis of students’ own writing, we will identify areas of grammar, spelling and punctuation that will be explicitly taught so that students may use these more effectively.

Throughout speaking and listening, writing and reading tasks this term, students will be encouraged to:

·       Express themselves

·       Think imaginatively, creatively and interpretively

·       Reflect on their learning

Mathematics

Number will be the primary focus for this term.  We have already begun working on whole number and place value.  Our priority will be the development of mental strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. These skills will be applied in a variety of tasks focusing on length and area. We will be working on applying these strategies to real-life situations through open-ended tasks.

History

This topic provides a study of colonial Australia in the 1800s. Students look at the founding of British colonies and the development of a colony. They learn about what life was like for different groups in the colonial period. They examine significant events and people, political and economic developments, social structures and settlement patterns. Students then look at how these events have shaped Australia to become the country it is today.

Personal Development, Health & Physical Education (incl Sport)

Our Health unit this term is focused on Road Safety.  Students will look at ways they can stay safe on and around roads as pedestrians, cyclists and vehicle passengers.

During Term 1, students will develop skills in athletics and novelty games in preparation for our school athletics carnival.  PE lessons are on Wednesdays this term.  Students will need to wear their sport uniform on that day.

Visual Arts

We will engage in a range of visual art experiences related to a variety of Key Learning areas.  Students will be given the opportunity to make and appreciate different forms of art.

Music

Music lessons are on Wednesdays this term.

Library

Year 5’s borrowing day will be Tuesday. 

Exercise Books: We have already sent home books to be covered in clear contact.  Would you please ensure your child’s books are covered as soon as possible as it helps them to last through the year.
